Synthetic Phonics

It is now accepted that phonics is one of the essential components of a balanced approach to the teaching of reading.

So what is Synthetic Phonics?

Wikipedia defines Synthetic Phonics as: “Synthetic Phonics is a method of teaching reading which first teaches the letter sounds and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full pronunciation of whole words. The method relates to the English language only, and as of 2007 is the favoured method of the UK government.”

Put simply Phonics is the way to help your child to learn reading skills by first learning the letter sounds. Then by using synthetic phonics, blending these sounds together to achieve the full pronunciation of the word.

The word Phonics is used to describe the sounds each letter makes. Simply put, the word 'dog' can be read from its three sounds: d-o-g.

We don’t say the names of the letters as we say them in the alphabet, but instead say the sounds these letters make.

Likewise, the word 'think' is made up of three sounds: th-i-nk, where pairs of letters combine to make a single sound.

Similarly, 'dash' is made up of the three phonetic sounds: d-a-sh.

The Synthetic Phonics methods have been proved beneficial in teaching all children to read and can be used as a remedial teaching method for those branded dyslexic.
